En rätt stor del av min vardag består i att läsa böcker om judisk historia, men när den kände brittiske historikern Simon Schama gör en serie på fem delar för BBC som bl a uppmärksammas i Haaretz och dessutom går att se gratis på SVT Play, då blir man ju lite nyfiken och får lust att se den.
Tyvärr går det inte, för varken BBC eller SVT Play gör serien tillgänglig för tittare utanför landets gränser. Vi här i Långtbortistan får nöja oss med att läsa en intervju med Schama där han bland annat diskuterar tendensen att göra judisk historia till en lång studie i lidande och förföljelser. Schama: ”“We didn’t want to pretend the bad stuff didn’t happen but we also wanted to say, ‘Isn’t it absolutely amazing that celebration, colour, animation, liveliness and joy happen almost entirely throughout the history of the Jews?’ I put it this way: Jews don’t necessarily assume the worst, they just prepare for its distinct possibility. There are so many examples of the determination to choose life, as it were.”
Och om sionism: ”Some of the world thinks of Jews as victims or conquerors, but there was an intense strain of Zionism that was neither.” Något att berätta för Ingmar Karlsson?
